Japanese mixes kana and kanji, and these thirty words, easiest first, show you the real thing. Choose each meaning or say you do not know to get a CEFR level and an estimate of your Japanese vocabulary.
Guessing makes the result less accurate, not better — "I don't know" is a perfectly good answer. The test stops early once the words get clearly past you.
| Level | What it means |
|---|---|
| A1 | Greetings, numbers, the everyday nouns |
| A2 | Shopping, directions, routine and family |
| B1 | Travel, work and opinions on familiar topics |
| B2 | Abstract topics, the news, most films |
| C1 | Nuance, idiom, professional vocabulary |
| C2 | Rare and literary words |
Watch Your Language groups its Japanese packs by the same CEFR levels as this test. Start at the band you found, and the app shows those words on your iPhone Lock Screen and Apple Watch face, bringing back the ones you keep forgetting.
